Online Gambling Airline Grounded
4 May 2006
After much talk of advertising online gambling sites on 6 aircrafts based in Las Vegas, the head of the airline company has gotten cold feet after worrying about the market’s reaction to online gambling advertisements would be. It was previously reported that Bodog online gambling site had closed a deal with an airline company for an unusual advertising campaign of having its name blazed across the side of the airplane. It is now reported that the online gambling advertising deal has been called off after the owner of the six aircraft developed cold feet. The rumors are that the owner was worried about current legislation regarding online gambling advertising and did not know how the market would accept this type of advert campaign, even though Bodog doesn't offer online craps or slots but focuses on sportbetting, the aircrafts' owner decided to pass.
The owners of Allegiant Air, a Las Vegas-based air carrier, sharply canceled an advertising deal with Bodog that would have turned six of the airline's jets into flying gambling billboards. The managing director at Allegiant, said he had broken off the deal after finding out more about the U.S. Justice Department's intimidating views on the legality of promoting internet gambling, such as online craps, slots or poker in America. Bodog had already begun publicizing pictures of what the aircraft would look like with its symbol.
The internet gambling site’s founder and CEO Calvin Ayre was reported saying that he understood Allegiant's decision and was saddened that the airline had to feel threatened and pressured into not being able to uphold its constitutional rights and advertise what they feel is acceptable – online gambling or anything else.
